The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, JULY 21, 1868. TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE.
Wellington, July 21. 12.24 p.m. A gentleman, who left Waihi on Saturday morning, reports all well there, but for want of men to defend the town of Patea, Colonel M'Donnell can make no aggressive movement. A meeting of Waitotara natives took place on Friday last, for the purpose of informing the Europeans and Hau-haus what course they intended to pursue. Colonel Gorton and the Putiki Chiefs were invited, and also the authorities from Wanganui. They went, were well received and feasted. The meeting wound up with expressions of a firm determination on the part of the Waitotara natives to preserve peace within their boundaries. The Wanganui Militia are to be called out.
