<——*■—»*»*« mt _— — —» — — I II Returns recently prepared for the information of the Governor, show a marked decrease in the numbers of the Maori population of these islands. Ten years ago a Government census returned the total Maori population at 56,049 ; twenty years ago, in 1848, it was estimated at 100,000. The Wellington Independent of the 14th inst., referring to the passing of a bill by the Provincial Council for the purpose of appointing an Education Coramission for that province, calls attention to the fact that the Government of Otago expended in 1867 £11,731 for the education at public schools of 4367 children; Canterbury, £10,064 for 4039 children ; Nelson, £6410 for 2256 children ; whilst Wellington, the seat of Government, provided the munificent amount of £2,500 for lhe education of 1165 children.
