The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, JULY 20, 1868. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board took place on Friday evening at the Board room. A ll the members were present, Mr Bentley, M.P.C. being in the cliair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The following tenders for the improvements in the Waimea Koad, the consideration of which had been deferred from the last meeting, were then opened :— Cockram and Dunlop, £243, R. K. Turner and Son, £236 155.; J. Bradcock and r! Grant, £179. It was resolved that the last mentioned tender be accepted. The following tenders -were opened for the erection of the pedestal and lamp, at the junction of Bridge and Trafalgar-streets, to serve also the purposes of a drinking fountain and a receptacle for the hose &c. in case of fire:— D. Eobertson, in totara wood, £24; in Adele Island stone, £38; J. Scott, in wood, £26 lOs. Some discussion ensued as to the material to be adopted, and it was ultimately determined that Mr Robertson's tender for stone should be accepted. The consideration of the report of the Public Works Committee as to gravelling the road near the Bishops School in Nile-street, -was postponed until the next meeting of the Board. A letter w as read from Mr Job Aldridge asking permission to cut a footpath to his premises in Van Diemen's-street, which -was granted, on condition that it be earned out in accordance with the recommendations alraady made by the Public Works Committee. A memorial was received from eight residents in Nile-street East, complaining of the state of the footpaths, &c. These repairs had already been ordered to be carried out by the Public Works Committee. A memorial was read from seven residents in Manuka- street East, calling attention to that part of the street lying near Mr Catley's residence, which was referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter was received from W. Adams Esq., complaining of the state of the road at the east end of Hardy-street, near Milton Grove, which -was also referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter was received from the Provincial Secretary stating that £100 had been paid on account of the vote to the Board of Works passed during the last session of the Provincial Council. A letter from Mr Scotland asking to be permitted to place a pilaster or column of the build • ing about to be erected for Mr T. Milner in Tra-falgar-st, so as to project 5 inches into the street. The Secretary was instructed to inform Mr Scotland that his request could not be complied with. An offer from Mr John Aiken to supply labor for making up the street on the east side of the cutting in Bronte-street, was accepted. Mr Webb called attention to the disgraceful state of the road in Washington Valley, and the Secretary was instructed to make some temporary repairs. The Secretary produced a rough draft of the Annual Report of the works effected by the Board during the last 12 months. The Board then adjourned until Monday, the 27th inst., at 11 a.m. when a special meeting will be held, previous to the election, for the purpose ot receiving and signing the balance sheet for the past year.
