A writer in the Birmingham Post makes & singular statement with respect to the , town of Droitwich. He says : — ' You recollect the rumor, current at the time of Lord Derby's resignation, of Sir John Pakington's elevation to the peerage. There may be come personal reasons for his removal from the Commons, known to him as well as to Mr Disraeli; but it is not generally known that there is a physical necessity for some such place of refuge being found for your estimable neighbor. His seat is not safe. I don't mean that any low Radical has a chance of ousting him, but that Droitwich itself is fast sinking; The withdrawal of large quantities of salt has affected the solidity of the \ ground to such an extent as to cause the 1 town and neighborhood greatly to subside. Levels have been taken recently by the authorities of the Worcester Canal and there is no doubt that the site of Droitwich and the Parliamentary seat of Sir John are in perfl. The celebrated Island of Eva, one of the gems of the. Friendly Islands, is in the ) Canterbury market. Its sale is advertised to include good sheep, &c, and there are 20 years of the lease yet unexpired. ■■ As the steamer Oregon was passing a quay in New York, on which a newly- , arrived Irishman belonging to the celebrated O*Regan family was standing, he was heard to exclaim, .'O-r-e-g-o-n — T ,., O'Regan ! Oh Ibe jabers ! only four weeks in this country yet, and a steamboat /Christened after me.'
