The following items of Australian intelligence are taken from telegrams in the Canterbury Times : — The trial of Shire 3, the snake .experimenter, for the murder of Mr Drummond, which begun on Wednesday the 24th ult. ended in his acquittal. - . The Melbourne Hospital pliabilities amouni to £14,000. There is a special appeal to the public for subscriptions. The Williamstown volunteers presented £100 to the widow of Dooley, who was accidentally shot at the review on the Queen's Birthday. More than £18,000 have been already subscribed to the Alfred Memorial Hospital at Sydney. Johnston, the late manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Sofala, has been acquitted on the charge of embezzlement. ' Aboriginal outrages in North Queensland have become frequent. Manson, a squatter.on the Norman Eiver, and his shepherds have been murdered by the blacks. The Customs authorities at Sydney have ; seized £3000 worth of goods imported by a leading firm, because they were invoiced below their real value. The seizure has caused great excitement. A testimonial, worth £400,: was presented to Mr Vial, at Sydney, on June 22; by the
Premier, as a memento of Mr Vial's courage ' in securing O'Farrell. The news from Queensland is very encouraging ; new and rich reefs are discovered daily. The agents of the Melbourne Company have concluded arrangements with King Thakombau. Ex- Judge Booth by died at Adelaide on May 22. His funeral was largely attended. A man named James Wilson, a hawker, attempted to murder Mr Kiuselia, inspector of the Eastern Melbourne market, by discharging a pistol wifchia a yard of his head. Mr Kinselia escaped with a severe face wound, and the runlan was promptly secured. The marriage of Miss Manners Sutton, eldest daughter of the Governor of Victoria, to Mr 0, E. Bright, was celebrated on the 25 th ult. at Toorak Church, by the Bishop of Melbourne, assisted by the Rev. Mr Sandys. The ceremony passed off with. great eclat. There were ten bridesmaids, and the church was crowded. Compton has been committed for trial on a charge of embezzlement. The Art Union distribution of Judge Cheeke's stud at Varroville has been stopped by the Government of New South Wales. A severe shock of' earthquake was recently felt at Maitland, N.S.W. - The Governor of Victoria, in reply to the address of the Assembly, has refused to embody the Darling Gram iv the Appropriation Act, and great excitement prevailed in consequence.
