Two smart shocks of earthquake were felt at Alexandria on the 19th of February at midnight. No damage was done. It was blowing hard atthe time. The Peninsular and Oriental Company's steamer ftipon was detained for two days outside, being unable to enter on account of the weather. Some persons in Malta say tbey felt a slight shock on the same night. An automaton, in the form of a man, has been invented by Mr M. L. Deddrick, an ingenious American machinist. The man, which is moved by steam, will stand upright, walk, run, &c, in any direction at almost any speed. Whilst the figure moves it will drag after it a load the weight of which would tax even the strength of three stout horses. The steam man stands seven feet nine inches high, the other dimensions of his body be jig. in proper proportions, making him a second Daniel Lambert, by which name he is facetiously Bpoken of among the workmen. He weighs 5331b5 ; steam is generated in the body or trunk, which is nothing more than a three-horse power engine. The legs are complicated and wonderful. It is altogether, perhaps, the mosfc^curious automaton that as yet been seen. He is warranted by the manufacturer tp run a year without repairs. Is a ship's fender used to protect the vessel from the fire of the enemy ? What kind of ammution is used for shot silk ? Will any company insure the property of a man imbued with the fire of genius? When the waves wash the shore do ihey use Harper Twelvetrees' washing power ? Does the captain go into mourning for a dead reckoning? If bark is used in tanning, what is tbe commercial value of the bark of a tan terrier.? What kind of cordage js used in rigging the market?
