The Marlborough Press states that a movement is on foot, and a petition has been drafted, petitioning the General Assembly to separate the Electoral District of Picton from the Provinca of Marlborough, and to constitute it into a county. A case of unnatural and almost incredible inhumanity has been revealed at Ballarat.- A man named James Taylor was lately sent to gaol on the charge of brutal illusage of his children. Since his imprisonment the children have made some statements which induced the police to make inquiries, the result being that be has been again brought up on the charge of attempting to poison the children. The latter, -were- examined and deposed to the prisoner having regularly administered to them, twice a day several drops of soms stuff from a bottle, which used to burn their tongues, lips, and throats, and make them sick. The prisoner was committed for trial.
