LATEST FROM THE EAST COAST.
Wellington, May 22, 11 a.m. Intelligence has been received from Opotiki and Whakatane to the 10th. Every available man had been ordered out ou the previous afternoon on the expedition, which left the Camp and fell in with the Hauhaus. An engagement took place, and several were killed and wounded. When the vessel left, the firing was etill going on. The next news was expected by the Ahuriri. The news from the Thames Goldfields is good. The Auckland papers say that the whole formation from Cape Colville to some distance south of the township, is one vast receptacle of auriferous quartz. The want of machinery is much complained of. The Panama Mail had not been signalled.
