THE MOTUEKA WHARF.
To thb Editor o_ the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir — I believe it is generally admitted that the Nelsonians are the most indolent people in all creation ; if so, sir, I believe the Motuekans are the next most happy people. lam sure they arc a good natured people, and generally take the world as they find it. I have heard a great deal Of the benefit they derive from the regular trading Of the Lady Barkly, and how her services are appreciated ; I had an opportunity of judging of the value of her services on Monday last. She was advertised to leave Motueka at 5 o'clock, and I was informed she was generally punctual to time. Consequently I took care to be on the wharf tather before the time. She arrived from Nelson about half-past 4 ; I was then informed she had about 15 tons of cargo to discharge ; no great quantity certainly, but sufficient to detain her for two hours — and this in consequence of the wharf being covered with potatoes, which had been laid thereon about 10 or 12 days previous. It is unnecessary to inform you that the passengers (about 26 in number) who had to wait on the wharf, or under the shelter of the storehouse, or the verandah of the hotel, complimented his Honor the Superintendent and the gcod people of Motueka on such excellent arrangements, and on the manner in which they appreciate regular trading. Verily it is much to be regretted that these good easy people of Motueka have been allowed to branch off from the Sleepy Hollow family, tor truly they are a great and wondrous race. Yours, Sec, A TRAVELLER, Nelson, May 20, P.S. — I forgot to inform you that the Government some time ago built a storehouse, capable of storing 60 tons, at the end ofthe Wharf, and that the said storehouse is now blocked up with 10 or 12 tons of potatoes, in consequence of there being no person to take charge of or direct the stowage.
