GREAT FIRE AT WELLINGTON.
Wellington, May 17. 11 a.m. A great fire took place this (Sunday) morning ou the beacb, by which the following buildings were destroyed : — the South Sea Hotel, James's furniture manufactory, and the premises belonging to Messrs Kane, draper ; Carmour," butcher; Cohen, tobacconist; Brown, grocer; Armstrong, saddler; and Webb, upholsterer. The following wero insured : — the South Sea Hotel, for £700 ; Mr James, for £1000, and Mr Kane, for £4000. We learn from a private telegram received yesterday by Messrs Curtis Brothers, and courteously placed at our disposal, that the damage done by the fire is estimated at above £20,000. The following are the liabilities sustained by the Insuranco Offices : — Liverpool aud London, £5000; Royal, £1000; Northern, £1250;' New Zealand, £1000 ; and the North British, £350.
