THE LATE HOSPITAL CASE.

To the Editor of thb Nelson Evening Mail, Sir — The case of the man Engham, who died of apoplexy at the Hospital on Sunday last, has attracted considerable attention in consequence of representations made in the newspapers that undue delay took place in admitting the man. The rule of admission, which has been advertised in the newspapers, is, that ordinary cases must be certified to first by the Surgeon, then by a member of Committee before admission, but that urgent cases are to be admitted at once. The Committee of Management have made due inquiry into Eugbam's case. Mr Barton was not in the Hospital when the Rev. Mr Vickers applied for Eugham's immediate admission, aud the responsibility of deciding whether the case was urgent or not, rested with Mrs Barton, whose hesitation caused a short delay. In order to relieve Mrs Barton from responsibility in the eveut of such a case occurring again, the Committee of Management have instructed Mrs Barton, in the absence of her husband, to receive provisionally any ease applying for immediate admission, until the opinion of the Surgeou cau be obtained. It is so far satisfactory to know ou the authority of the surgeon who conducted the post mortem examination, that no possible expedition could have prevented a fatal result in Eugham's case. The Committee of Managerneut will be much obliged to you if jou will give insertion to this statement. Yours &c, C. Hunter Brown, Hon. Sec.
