An extraordinary marriage took place near Reading the other day, uuder special license from the Archbishop of Canterbury. The ceremony was performed in the house of the bridegroom, who was and is still believed to be dying. 'He had (says a Berkshire contemporary) to be lifted from his bed, wrapped in blankets, and carried into the room in which the ceremony was to take place. He was supported while the ceremony was being read, and at its conclusion was conveyed back to his bed-room.' The explanation is simple and touching. The gentleman's first wife had on her own death bed desired that the lady now married should have the care of the children, and it was in order that she may legally continue to do so that the second marriage was determined on. If the sick man should after all recover, it is to be hoped that nobody will regret the arrangement.

A Parliamentary return, obtained in pursuance of an order made on the motion of Mr Bazley, and showing how we are taxed, states that in the financial year 1865-66, the latest year for which any inland revenue returns are available, the list of licences taken out in the United Kingdom comprises 7,243 dealers in spirits, selling in larger quantities, 94,715 retailers of spirits, 50,790 dealers in wine, 5,821 maltsters, 38,125 brewers, 4,740 sellers of strong beer in larger quantities, 2,576 sellers of strong beer not to be consumed on the premises, and 137,200 pub* licans, beershop keepers, and other retailers ef beer. The host is 340,000 strong, but there may be some persons having licences of two kinds.. In the course of the year 16,455 publicans and 1,670 beer retailers took out occasional licences to sell ofi'the premises for the day. — Watchman.

It is computed that the cost of distilling water at Annesley Bay is 2s. a gallon, and the daily needs of the men and animals collected there average 40,000 gallons a day. Therefore, the water supply alone of that station is costing the British taxpayers at the rate of £1,520,000 a year. — Pali-Mali Gazette.
