TAKAKA.
[from a correspondent.]
On Saturday, the 11th inst. Mr Sparrow M.P.C., met the electors of the district of Takaka, at Mr Dodson's Takaka Hotel, Mr J. Reilly being in the chair.
Mr Sparrow explained that as the Provincial Council was to meet on the 21st iust., he considered it his duty to call the electors together, in order to ascertain, as far as possible, the requirements of the District.
Mr J. Walker proposed that the sum of £50 should be applied for, in order to improve the Motupipi road at the Cornhills, which was in a very dangerous state. This proposition was not seconded, but au amendtneut, proposed by Mr Dixon, and seconded by Mr Dodson, that a grant of £100 should be obtained, for the same purpose, was carried unanimously. Mr J. Walker proposed and Mr Alex. M'Donnell seconded a resolution, that a sum of £250 should be applied for, to erect a horse bridge over the Takaka River at Mr Dixon's. This was also carried unanimously.
Mr C. Nicoll proposed and Mr J.Walker seconded, a resolution that a sufficient sum of money be placed on the Estimates for the making of a cross road between Mr Wallis's and Mr King's sections, on the East Takaka Road, to meet an equivalent sum to be raised by subscriptions. This was also carried.
A proposition by Mr C. Nicoll, seconded by Mr Dixon, that a memorial be got up by the miners of the district, requesting that a sum of money be placed on the Estimates for the purpose of making a bridle track to the Upper Anatoki]and Waingora Diggings, the probable cost of such track being about £300, was also carried. Mr G-. Taylor then proposed and Mr J. Walker seconded the motion that the best thanks of the meeting are due to Mr Sparrow as the representative of the district for the able manner in which he has advocated its interests, and, also express its entire confidence in him.
Mr Sparrow said that he felt much flattered by th'B mark of confidence and esteem, and after thanking the meeting, stated that he should always endeavor to merit their confidence.
The meeting then terminated with a cordial vote of thanks to the Chairman.
