GENERAL SUMMARY.
London, February 26. The Queen is at Osborne and quite well. 1 Her Majesty will bold three Drawingrooms = soon. The Prince and Priucess of Wales and < their children bave arrived at Marlborough House, the Princess having derived great benefit from her visit to Sandringham. The Crown Princess of Prussia (Prin--1 cess Royal of Englaud) has had another son. Prince Leopold has been daDgerously ill, and it was thought at one time that his recovery was hopeless. Feuianism is dyiog out. There have been a few more riots at Cork. Mackay, a noted Fenian, resisted the police, and shot a so stable, who has .since died. The police th.i'god with fixed bayonets, and injured s-veral of the rioters. Mackay. was secured, and is to be tried for murder. He has since boon identified as the leader of the attack on the Martello tower, near Cork. The Cierkeuwell prisoners have been committed for trial. Mullauy gave damning evidence against them as approver. The Editor of the Irishman, aud Sullivan, editor of the Weekly News, have been convicted of publishing seditious libels. The former has heen sentenced to 12, and the latter to 6 months' imprisonment. Both are to find security in f 1000. Great anxiety is felt as to the arrival of the Somersetshire. She is 83 days out, and insurances bave been effected at 30 guineas per cent. (It will be seen by our latest telegrams that the Somersetshire has arrived safely). Money is a shade firmer. Discount is ljf to I£. Trade is more brisk. Australian securities are remarkably firm, in some instances an advance has been obtained. The Australian United Gold Mining Company will float successfully. Colonial wool has been privately sold &£ higher prices. An advance is expected nt the public sales.
Obituary : — Dr. John Davy ; Sir David Brewster ; Hon. James ; Gordon ; W. Herapath, the eminent chemist ; Mr. Justice Shee ; Archdeacon Rnshton, and Rescind Pasha. The Treasury Commissioners have given a certificate to bring the Bank of South Australia into immediate operation. The creditors of Overeud, Gurney & Co. have been offered the payment of the balance of their claims by instalments of three and six months. The majority have assented to the proposition, The firm of H. Smith, Darry, & Co., East India and Colonial Merchants; has suspended payment. The English and Australian Copper Company have declared a dividend of oue shilling. The Australian Agricultural Company have issued a Report, to the effect that the cash in. the bank amounts to £4,384, and a dividend of 7s. 6d. is recommended. The arrivals of wool were from Victoria, 39,960 bales ; Sydney, 12,241 ; Adelaide, 19,019; total, with other supplies, 113,364 bales. Business has shown increased activity. Cape and Australian wools are enquired for, and sold privately at higher prices. Generally the purchaser shows disinclination to pay more than the November rates ; prices are expected to keep firm through the ensuing sales, though perhaps an advance may be obtained for favorite qualities of Australian wool. Tallow, 43/9 -, Leather firm at late rates. Salted hides have advanced gd. to 3d.
