The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, APRIL 13, 1868. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board took place on Thursday last, the 9th inst, all the members were present, with the exception of Mr Bentley, Mr R. Burn M.P.C. being in the chair. The minutes of the last meeting haviDg been read and confirmed,

The Finance Committee reported that they had examined the books and accounts for the last month, which they had found to be correct.

A letter from Mr Lightfoot, relative to the lengthening of the drain in Nile-street, the consideration of which had been deferred from the last board then came under notice, and on the motion of Mr D. Burns, it was carried that the pipes conveying water to the sewer from the mill lead should be taken out, as, in consequence of the completion of the Waterworks, there was no farther need for them.

The Public Works Committee" reported favorably to the reduction of the hill in Bronte-street, near the Waimea Road, provided that the expenditure required was not excessive. -

The Public Works Committee having also reported m favor of the repair of the road and the construction of a small culvert in Trafalgarsquare, the work was ordered to be done.

The following tenders were opened for the construction of the culvert-bridge near Saltwater Bridge :— Alex. Adams, £185 45. ; J. B. Walton and Co., £194 2s. Forthe wideningof the Havenroad:— J. B. Walton and Co., £122 35. ; Alex. Adams, £120 175., for Boulder Bank stone, and £146 3s. for Dun Mountain stone ; R. K. Turner and Sons, £160, for Boulder Bank stone, and £170 for Dun Mountain ; for the two works conjointly, Cockram and Dunlop, £359 10s. if Boulder Bank stone, and £10 extra, if Dun Mountain stone be used ; Robert Simpson, £375. Qf these the following were accepted by the Board ; Alex. Adams, £185 4s. for the culvert, and J. B. Walton and Co. £122 35., for the widening of the road, provided that Dun Mountain stone be employed in the work.

The Inspector of Nuisances reported that gorse was growing freely in Vernon Road, as well as in several of the thoroughfares specified, and on the motion of Mr. Webb, it was carried that the Inspector be again authorised to summon parties not complying with the provisions of the Gorse Act.

The Secretary reported that the Brook-street Valley Road was in a very dangerous state, and the consideration of the matter was referred to the next meeting of the Board.

On the motion of the chairman, it was resolved that the curbing in Bridge-street, in front of Mr. Hounsell's new store, be extended, and also the footpath gravelled on the opposite side of the road.

A large hole near the asb tree on the banks of the Maitai, was ordered, on the motion ,of Mr Hooper, to be filled in.

On the motion of Mr Hooper, certain repairs in Russell-street were referred to the Public Works Committee, and those in Shelburne-street were ordered to be carried out forthwith.

On the motion of Mr Webb, the drain across the Haven-road, near the Pier Hotel, was ordered to be cleaned out.

A letter was read from Mr Akersten and others, calling the attention of the Board to the state of the footway and road near their premises on the Haven-road, and the Secretary was instructed to attend to the matter.

Mr D. Burns reported that a drain in Hampdenstreet was choked up, and Mr Webb suggested the propriety of widening the Waimea Road near Mr Stringer's. The Secretary was instructed to see that both these works were carried out.

Permission was granted to Mr R, Black to erect a hoarding in front the intended new buildings in Bridge-street, for Mr Askew.

A discussion ensued, relative to the necessity of obtaining an emendation of the Sewerage Act, with a view to extend the time of payment of the special rates, and on the motion of JMJr Hooper, it was carried that Messrs R. Burn, D. Burns and J. Webb consult with the Solicitor to the Board, with a view to the drawing out of a bill for this end, to be presented during the ensuing session of the Provincial Council.

Several accounts having been passed, the Board adjourned until Friday, the 24th inst.
