The following telegram reached us at half-past five yesterday evening, and was posted at the ofiice of this journal : — Wellington, Monday, April 6, 5 p.m. The Prince will leave for England direct on the 4th instant. He is quite recovered. 0' Farrell has been condemned to death. He heard his sentence unmoved, and throughout the whole trial maintained the same calm demeanour. Late in the evening the following intelligence was also received : — Wellington, 7.55 p.m. The Rakaia l "arrived here at 3 p.m. j to-day. It is positively decided that the Prince will go home to Eugland direct. The Galatea was to have sailed from Sydney on Saturday last, the 4th instant. O'Farrell was tried on the 30th and 31st of March. The plea of insanity was set up, but not well sustained by evidence ; the Judge summed up against this plea, and the jury found the prisoner guilty. Sentence of death was passed on him. The prisoner showed no emotion. The Prince interceded with the authorities to spare O'Farrell's life ; but the authorities thinking an example necessary, will probably hang him. The plea for the Prince not visiting New Zealand is that his medical advisers have recommended a voyage home. The Prince expressed anxiety to visit New Zealand. H.M.S. Falcon arrived at Wellington en route for Hokitika, with 100 of the 18th Royal Irish. The news received by the Government from Hokitika being peaceful and reassuring, the troops will remain in Wellington. The Falcon goes to the West Coast and the Buller as a precautionary measure.
