The Nelson Evening Mail FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 1868. GOLDEN BAY ELECTION.

The nomination of three candidates for the vacancy created in the representation of this district in the House of Representatives by the retirement of A. J. Richmond, Esq., took place on Monday last, at the Court-house, Coll ing wood. The Returning Officer, Dr. Turnell, having read the writ, Mr. Arthur Shuckburgh Collins was proposed by Mr. W. C. Riley and seconded by Mr. R. R. Fellowes, Mr. W. Gibbs, M.P.C., being proposed by Mr. A. Boy/, and seconded by Mr W. Wiilianas, and Mr. E. Wastney, M.P.C., being proposed by Mr. J. M. Gibson, and seconded by Mr. C. Nicoll. A show of hands \va3 then taken, which was declared to be iu favor of Mr. Gibbs, aud a poll having been demanded by Mr. Wastney, which was fixed to take place on Wednesday, the proceedings terminated. The election took place at the various polling places on Wednesday, and has resulted in the return of Mr. A. S. Collius, by a majority of five, secured by the votes of several electors from Nelsou, wijo arrived that morning by the Lady Barkly, and whose numbers would have been still further reinforced, but for the fact flint several persons who had intended recording their votes for Mr. Collins, were either d-tained in town by business, or lost their passages through not arriving iu time for the departure of the steamer on the previous day. M»\ Collins was aiso indebted for several votes at the Slate River, 40 the promptness which he displayed on hearing that several reports very injurious to his success had been industriously circulated amongst the miners in that district, which he immediately visited, and, by addressing the electors, succeeded iu dispelling the impression thus created. Mr. Collins is an untried man, but we have every assurance that in. his person the district will be both ably and worthily represented. The following are the numbers polled for the respective candidates at the four polling places : — Collins. Gibbs. Wastney. Collingwood ... 3L 19 l Takaka ... 13 29 4 . Slate Kiver ... 20 13 0 Clifton ... 5 3 15 69 64 20
