NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the the Board was held last night. Present : Messrs Bentley (chairman), Burn, Webb, Hooper, and D. Burns. The subject of the proposed new culvert at Saltwater Bridge having been brought before the Board, the Secretary submitted the plans and estimates which he had prepared, and considerable discussion ensued upon the subject. It was ultimately settled, on the motion of Mr Burn, that a brick or stone culvert shall be constructed across the Haven-road, with a flood-gate, 6 feet deep by 10 wide, on the sea side. The plans prepared by the Secretary were very satisfactory tothe Board, but were deemed too expensive at the present time, and as likely to create dissatisfaction amongst ratepayers in those parts of the town where other important works were required. The Secretary's plan for widening the Haven-road was adopted, and a specification ordered to be prepared. The Secretary's report on the state of the Waimearoad was also adopted. A letter was received from Messrs. Merryweather and Sons of London, -together with illustrations of steam fire engines, and all the appliances necessary for a fire brigade. It was unanimously determined that assistance should be granted to Mr. Bout and others towards the removal of the

gravel accumulations on their property on the Brook-street stream. The Report of the Public Works Committee on Parere-street, was adopted. An application from Captain Johnston in reference to a dangerous part of the road opposite his gate in Washington Valley was received, aud the work ordered to be done immediately. Captain Rough's application to have draining pipes put in the Brook-street stream was granted. The Secretary was instructed to have the sluice-gates of the Trafalgar-street sewer kept open nightly. The Secretary was instructed to write to his Honor the Superintendent, requesting the use of the waterworks for the purpose of watering the streets, as being beneficial to the roads, and and as calculated to prevent much injury to property through dust, and also for flushing tne Bridge-street sewer. Mr Francis Sait's application relative to repairs necessary in Cambria-street having been granted, and several accounts passed, the Board adjourned until Friday, the 27th instant.
