The trial of Swale for the murder of Raukin, in connection with the late fire at Chris tchurch, was concluded ou the Bth instant, when a verdict of ' Guilty' was returned, in which the Judge concurred, sentencing him to death, without hope of mercy. The following important notification appears in the Otago Provincial Government Gazette : — Being desirous of promoting the introduction into Otago of Woolleu Manufactures, either by guaranteeing for a fixed period interest on the capital invested in buildings and machinery, or by suitable bonus otherwise ; the Provincial Government will be glad to receive overtures from any person or persons who may feel disposed to embark in such undertaking, such overtures to be forwarded in time to enable them to be submitted to the Provincial Council early in April next. By loss of life by the dreadful hurricane in the West Indies, 120 women in Southampton have lost their husbands. At the Mansion-house, London, Mr Vandermoolen was fined £100 for smugling. The trick was ingenious. The prisoner and another man landed three casks from the Diana, of Amsterdam, as 1 vegetables preserved in salt, value £3, free of duty.' On examination the casks were found to have false heads containing 124 lbs. of cigars, worth 15s. per. lb. without duty, which was ss. per. lb. On nonpayment of the fine the prisoner was sen--ieuced to six months imprisonment.
