A new contract, to last twelve years, has been entered into with the Peninsular and Oriental Compauy for the conveyance of the New Zealaud, Australian, India, and Qhina malls, and came into operation in February. The terms are an annual subsidy of £-400,000, exclusive of the payment for the service between Point de Galle and Australia, the contract for which is still under negociation between the Imperial and Colonial Governments. The above payment will include the weekly service to aud from ludia, that is, 52 voyages during the year each way to and from India, 26 voyages each way from China to Poiut de Galle, aud the conveyance of the Australian mails 13 limes each way between England and Poiut de Galle. The contract is for a longer period than the previous one (which was for seven years), and its terms are considerably higher. No contract has been made for a line between Brindisi aud Alexandria ; as the port of Brindisi could not be substituted entirely for Marseilles, an extra service has been decided against on the score of outlay. The Australian mail will be onee in every four weeks joining the China steamer at Galle, as at present. When does a captain of a vessel commit self-mutilation ? When he goes on shore and leaves his hands on board. 'I never let my women,' says Archdeacon Paley, ' when they shop take credit. I always make them pay ready money, sir ; ready money, is such a check upon the imagination.'
