PROSPECTING IN THE MAITAI VALLEY.
To the Editor op tub Inklson Evening Mail. Fir—As nothing at a definitely practical nature resulted l'roui the meeting 1 held with reference to the prospecting 1 of the Mdtai, two practical miners, v.iih ine writer, have considered the matter, and would suggest that a month or six veeks'irial should be given; and in ord r thuE the w»,rk m,;y be carried on with some energy, that a committee ha formed to make such ar-UMgeiiients us may be most condudve to the success of die trial, iurnisliins rations with, say, £1 per vreek per man, for any specified time. This sum. or'course, cannot ie said to be wages, b it is enough to supply the few incidental expenses required bejood the hare rations. This, 1 think, is the surest means of having the matter .set at rest. A itss number will be of little avail, as, ooubtless, any West Coast mi.jer ut experience will admit. The interest naturally felt by the prospectors is the best guarantee of their pushing the work a-head. < We have been up several times and like the appearance of the iocality much. Yours, &c, I MIXKKS.
