Madame Siinonsen was for some i t. : nic joint prima lionua of the Lyster Opera Company, s>ud \<a that o;V;<a':ity achieved a scries of triumphs in I\iaibovi'-ai», Sydney and Adelaide. Mi* Sinumsen is an ;:ecomj>lit*heil violinist of the highest rank, whose i>Bi'l\>rm:uiC£s have elicited the most fl:itturin«;encomiums notonly iv these colonies but-.-vlsO in Europe, and they are accompanied by Miss Rebecca Isaacs, who also for some time sang with the Lyster Operu Company, by Mr Price, a tenor of cou-sidi-uible promise, and by M. Artof., a pianiste of whose powers report speaks highly. The entertainment promised at these concerts is one of rare character. The- Phoebe left the Mamikau at 4 p.m. on the 18th, arrived off Taranakiat 7 a.m. on the 19th, and left at 230 p.m. for Nelson, arriving here at 630 a.m. this morning. We are informed that a scheme is on foot with a view to the prospecting of the Mairai River Valley, where it is well known that gold has from time to time beeu discovered, iv small but sufficient quantities to warrant further investigation. Mr J. Cuwood, a connection of Mr Akersten, and the discoverer of the Oineo diggings, one of the richest gold-fields iv Victoria, who has followed mining pursuits for the last 18 years, is now in Nelson, and proposes to spend a month in prospecting the river from the head of the valley to its embouchure' into the sea. A subscription list has beeu opened with this object, aud it is proposed that in ihe event of the scheme proviug successful, each subscriber shall have a proportionate interest iv the results, the raouey subscribed to be expended under a management consisting of Mi* Cawood and two of the subscribers. We understand that Mr Cawood has beeu induced to niuke this proposition by au inspection of the valley, which he pro. nounces to be very • likuly* ground, aud we trust that bis anticipations may be fully realised.
