We understand that, a requisition very respectably and infii>enti:dly sigued, has been forwarded from Westport, requesting Mr Joseph Paul to stand as a caudiduie for the representation of that district at the approaching election on the 25th iust. We are not informed whether Mr Paul h:u> decided to comply with the request contaiued in the uquisitioo, which, we are informed, is worded in very flattering terms. Judge Johnston stated at Wellington the other day that ' much misapprehension and unnecessary alarm existed iv reference to the Coinage Offences Act. It had been brought to his notice that the popular view of the subject matter of this Act lias given considerable fe ar and annoyance to certain tradesmen and others, therefore he might, for their comfort, remark there was quite an erroneous impression, quite a mistaken notion about the Act prevalent, the law was in no way changed, aud there was no danger whatsoever in passing tradesmen's tokens aud those other copper coins common to the country. Iv fact, the. Coinage Offeuces Act was of but little importance.' At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, John Patterson, charged by Captain Flowerday, of the Ahurin, with beinj* a stowaway on boaid that steamer, admitted the offence, and was fined £3 and costs, being also ordered to pay his fare, £2 10a., and in default of payment was sentenced to six months' imprisonment in gaol, with hard labor. — James Stockwell, charged with driving a hackney carriage through the public streets without carrying a proper light, admitted the offence, and was fined 10s. aud costs. — An information had beea laid against Mr T. We hear much dissatisfaction' expressed amongst members of the Tolunteer Force, in consequence of the delay which ha 3 taken place in the payment of the capitation money, due in July last. No one who has been present at the recent parades can have failed to notice the present discreditable state of the various uniforms, especially those of the No. 1. Kifle Cadets :md the Artillery Cadets. If it be desired that our local force should present a satisfactory appearauce wheu the Prince visits Nelson, it is imperatively necessary that steps shoull be immediately taken to procure fresh uniforms, and we are informed that this cannot be done until the last year's capitation money has been received. Mr. Tingle, of Bridge-street, has lately received a consignment of ludiau goods, including sandal wood boxes, most delicately aud elaborately carved, specimens of the most miuute ivory maiqueterie work, and also of embroidery in all the gorgeous colors and patterns peculiar to Oriental couutries, which are now on sale, aud are well worthy of inspection. We understand that Mr. Tingle purposes raffling one of these specimens — a magnificent table cloth, valued at £40 — during the coming week. We understand that the usual halfyearly District Meeting of the delegates from the various town and country Lodges ot ther Oder of Oddfellows will be held at the Mansion of Peace Lodge-room at Waken* eld, on Tuesday morning at 30 o'clock.
