THE WAIMEA DINNER.

To the Editor of the Nkx,son Evening Mail.

Sir — A. letter appeared in your yesterday's issu.* of which. I presume, it is' intended that I should take notice.

One portion of 'he instructions given by a drill sergeant i--, that when a .vancing upon an enemy in skirmishing order you should take advantage of every inequ .lity afforded by the ground, so that you may deliver ymir own without exposing yoarseif to the enemy's fire, iiow far it is right or honorable to carry this rule into newspaper letter-writing I leave it to your readers to judge. 'Volunteer,' however, appear? to think himself perfectly justified in giving utterance, undercover of un anonymous letter, to ass.rtions to which he dare not attach his name. If he wishes me to reply to his letter, which I rather doubt, let him come forward. I will not say in a genrlenianly way, for to enforce such a con lirion would, I fear, place an insurmountable obstacle in the way of his ever appearing in print; but lee him, in a m inly, honest, straightforward manner, state his ground i)t' complaint, if he has any, and he will ii;id me perfectly resuly to defend myself and my Company. Lut not 'Volunteer' misunderstand me. Iby no means in end to .shirk the responsibility of reph iny to any accusations he may choose to make sig.iinst me. bat I will not fight with a shadow, ami therefore 1 invi.e him to declare himself boldly. If he declines doing so, I s u all look to you, .\lr E liior. to furnish me witii the name of the gallant 'Volunteer' who makes use of your columns f br the purpose of giving circulation to scandalous false-hoods.

Yours, &c,

TIIOS. j. BIUNDELL, Captain Wuimea liifle Volunteers.
