THE CHALLENGE CUP.
To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir— ln answer to 'Aquarius ' respecting the Challenge Cup not being put up for competition, I have no doubt that if 'Aquarius' will produce boats fit to compete, according to the terms specified by the late Captain Nicholson, they will, on approval by the Commodore and Sailing Committee of the Regatta Club, be allowed to sail for and win the cup. I have no doubt but that 'Aquarius ' aud the publie generally enjoyed the regattas of past years, still it came rather too expensive to the members of the Club, who, after paying their annual subscription, working hard to raise money, devoting a deal of time and trouble to ensure success — after all, when coming to settle up, to have to pay part ofthe prizes out of their own pcckets. I see no reason why we should not have a good regatta here, and I think if those who reap the benefit by the regatta, and the public for whom the sport is made, were to subscribe a little more liberally, the regatta would not be a thing of the past. I am, etc., One of the Sailing Committee N.R.C. Nelson, December 9, 1867.
