Correspondence.
To the Editor op the Nelson Evening* Mail. Sik — I see in Friday's Evening Mail a letter from ' One ofthe Fire Brigade,' wherein he complains of his black glazed cap. Allow me to inform him, through your paper, that color has no influence over terrestrial radiant heat. The power to absorb heat depends mainly upon the mechanical state of the surface exposed, in as much as the rougher the surface exposed, the greater the power to absorb heat and vice versa. A glazed cap having a smooth surface is therefore an inferior absorber of heat. Very simple experiments will prove the above statements. I am, etc., H. A. L. Nelson, November 16, 1867.
