At the trial of the.Pole for the attempted assassination of the Czar he exp'-essed regret at not having been successful. An animated debate took place in the French Chambers unanimously condemning the act of the assassin on French soil. The Czar departed from Paris on the 11th June, after cordial leave-taking. Napoleon's groom who saved the Czar's life has received the Legion of Honor and £12,000. Political prosecutions in Russia have been quashed, and amnesties have been granted to all excepting criminal offenders. The restrictions issued against Polish priests have been modified. The Italian Chambers have presented a new scheme to convert church property. A late telegram announces that the Emperor Maximilian had been shot. The news caused great excitement in Europe. All the Courts are in mourning. Mexico had been captured by the Liberals. The session of American Congress will take place in July. Jefferson Davis is expected to visit England shortly. Impeachment Committee of American Congress have recommended alternative (?) of vote of censure. President Johnsou was heartily received in travelling. In his speeches he declared for a complete restoration of the Union, and said that if successful in accomplishing it, he would retire from public life or further ambition. Three American steamers have been seized in Montreal for navigating the River St. Lawrence, without the permit required since the abrogation of the reciprocity treaty. Much sensation was caused thereby in New York. INDIA. The statement that the Viceroy is about to resign and return to England is positively contradicted from Simla. The P. and O. Company's steamer Azoff has narrowly escaped from foundering iu the Red Sea, but was saved by the timely assistance of the French steamer Sarthe. The Bombay Government has received despatches from Dr Seward, the British Consul at Zanzibar, dated April 28, stating that many natives had just arrived at the East Coast, from the country where Dr Liviugstone's murder is alleged to have taken place, but they had heard no rumor regarding it. COMMMERCIAL. A movement is expected for the reduction of discount to 2 per cent., and has caused a marvellous advance in public securities, consols having gone up to 1\ per cent, since last month, being at present (June 26^* 98|. The stock of gold in hand in the Banks of England and France amounts to £68,000,000. Many failures in the iron trade are reported in Staffordshire, and also amongst the members of the Stock Exchange of London. The latter are owing to the sudden rise of the funds. Business is altogether more favorable, owing to restrictions of political and financial excitement and restoration of confidence. LONDON WOOL REPORT: Colonial bales catalogued to June 21 numbered 141,945. Sales were active, only 43,000 bales were unsold, All' descriptions of faulty were Id lower and not in inquiry.
