The Westport Times of the 9th instant, announces the unexpected death of Mr. Joseph Tates, Gold-fields Inspector of the Bank of New South Wales, but receutly temporarily located there, on the re-open-ing of the Westport branch. It will be remembered that this gentleman was one of the intended victims of the Maungatapu gang, who had laid an ambush for him, with the intentiou of murdering and robbing him of the gold he was bringing, if we recollect right, from Waitahuna. By some accident, he did not take the expected route, and was thus saved from as earlier and frightful death.
