THE LATE ESCAPE EROM THE GAOL.

To the Editor op the Nelson Evening Maii* Sir — Would you oblige me by giving a space in this evening's Mail for the '"in* sertion of the following facts respecting the prisoner Anderson's escape from the Gaol. Having ,been one of the warders on duty at the time, they may be relied as the truth. Rumors are afloat which will not do me any good, if left unchallenged. In the first place, I deny that the prisoner Anderson was not missed till 6 o'clock. He was challenged by me to my senior overseer in less than five minutes after he left his barrow, and the answer I got to my challenge was in these words, "Ifc is all right." But, strange to say, when 5 o'clock came, it was found to be all wrong, for the man was gone. Now, sir, I will take leave of the matter here, by asking the question, who is to blame ? And in conclusion I would state that it was. not more thun 15 minutes from the time he left his barrow till 5 o'clock, and he was challenged by me to my senior officer in less than five minutes after he left his barrow. This statement I affirm to be the truth, and it can be borne out by proof. 1 should not have troubled you with this, but that I have on several occasions this morning been charged with it as being my fault, and I hope when this appears before the public, they will be able to judge for themselves in the matter. Yours, etc., W. Hammond.
