THE RAILWAY SCHEME.
To the Editor of the 'Nelson Evening Mail.' Sir — Your correspondent "Moonshine" is evidently moon-struck, yet is there some "method in his madiiess." His questions are pertinent, if not impertinent! Nobody in Nelson dees know anything about this Mr. Stevens, and nobody cares. That a railway to Cobden is desirable, every one admits ; that it is practicable, a great many doubt; and that Mr. Stevens is going to do it, your correspondent. "Moonshine" evidently disbelieves. Jukiug apart, Sir, this subject seems to require more deliberation tban our Council are apparently bestowing on it, in sitting, only three days upon it. They rush with, hot haste and eager heads to the Londonmarket for a million of money ; our estate, say they, is no good; take it! make any terms you like with Mr. Stevens, only make our railway! And "a number of influential Nelson gentlemen" will form themselves into a Committee to give him a character and " back his bili". Do you believe, sir, that any sane man in Nelson would put his name down for fifty shares in the Nelson, Buller, and Cobden Railway scheme ? If people here won't do it, how will the proposal be received where the Buller is unknown ? Mr. Stevens wants twelve months to inaugurate this undertaking, aud during this interval the province is to be bound not to treat with any other party. Well, perhaps there is uo great harm in that. Only my opinion is, that this hue and cry about railroads was simply a political catch-penny, and Mr. Stevens' mission to Englaud is an evasion of the subject, or at any rate a shelviug of it for a twelvemonth. I am, etc., Stoker. Nelson, June 19, 1867.
