The Canterbury papers congratulate the West Coast Telegraph officials upon the accuracy and rapidity with which the English news by the Gothenberg was transmitted. The message contained nearly 1500 words, and was transmitted in two hours and six minutes. The same message occupied 4< hours 15 minutes in its transmission on the General Government line from Christcnurcn. to Duuedin, or exactly twice the time occupied t>y the Provincial line. • In the Otago Provincial Government Balance Sheet, the expenses incurred through the visit of his Excellency the Governor to that province have been charged under the head of "Unforeseen Contingencies," as £914 os. In the estimates of last session the Treasurer took a vote *>f £500 bo account of this item.
