The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, APRIL 29, 1867. THE NOMINATION.
The nomination of a member to represent the City of Nelson in the Provincial Council, in the place of Oswald Curtis, Esq,, now Superintendent of the Province, took place at noon this day, at the Provincial Hall. A comparatively small number of electors were present, the general impression being that the electton would be uncontested. Precisely at 12 o'clock Mr. Sharp, the returning officer, having read the writ authorising the election, called upon those present to nominate the gentlemen who might be candidates for the vacant seat. Mr. W. Wells, M.H.R., proproposed, and Mr. Huddleston seconded, the nomination of Mr. Albert Pitt, barrister and solicitor, of this city, as a fit and proper person to represent Nelson in the Provincial Council. Mr. J. Webb proposed, and Mr. R. Burn seconded the nomination of Dr. Irvine. Both candidates then addressed the meeting, disclaiming any party motives in the contest, and statiug that they were only actuated by a desire to further the . interests of the Province. They then underwent a pretty severe cross-examina-tion on the various points of their political creed, as regarded local interests. Dr. Irvine expressed his anxiety that his candidature should not be made the cause of division at this moment, when it "was most desirable that all should act harmoniously together, and professed his readiness to abide by the verdict of the show of hands. He had been placed in that position quite unexpectedly, having refused to be put in nomination, but should he be elected, he believed that the electors would find him prepared to deal with the questions which would be brought before the Council during their next session. A show of hands was then taken by the Returning Officer, which was declared to be in favor of Mr. Pitt. Dr. Irvine, according to his expressed determination, did not demand a poll ; this was, however, done by his proposer and seconder, and the election was appointed to take place on Thursday next, at the Provincial Hall and the Odd-Fellows' Hall. The result of the polling will be announced at 5 o'clock on the same day.
