The following notice to Mariners is given in the New Zealand Gazette, March Bth : — Notice is hereby given that the channel ovev the bar at the entrance of the Hokianga River (as laid down in Captain Drury's survey) has lately shoaled
to seven feet at low water, and is no
longer safe to enter. The proper entrance now for vessels is by a new channel which has opened about two (2) cables' length to the southward of the old one, having a breadth of about one-and-a-half (1£) cables' length, and a depth of eighteen (18) feet at low water. The mark for entering the same is to -bring the flagstaff on the South Head" to bear N.E.. by E. \ E., and be further guided by a white square at the yard-arms of the flagstaff, which, hoisted at the south yard-arm denote "2£eep more to the southward," and when hoisted at the north yard-arm,
" Keep more to the northward ;" both
squares down denote " Steer as you go," ? Two beacons will, within a short time, be. erected on the South Head as leading snares ibr crossing the bar.
