Oue of the effects of the opening of tbe Bluff Harbor aud Invercargill Railway is the withdrawal of King Cobb from tbe passenger traffic between these two places. Another death from drowning has occurred at Kaiapoi. A young lad, named Henry Whitmore, whilst bathing on Sunday week was seen to sink and never rise again. At an inquest a verdict was returned of accidentally drowned. The first number of a new journal, rejoicing in the name of the Telegraph and General Advertiser, has beeu issued in Christchurch. It is a single sheet, to be published tri- weekly, and circulated gratuitously.
At the conclusion of the Timaru Race meeting the following race horses were sold by auction : — Musician knocked down for £220, Candidate for £45, and Knottingly for £290. Caffyn, after having seen them play, repeats his challenge to play the Aboriginal Eleven at single wicket, with three scouts given, for from £25 to £50 a-side. Wills is open to back Mullagh fbr £20, or himself for £50, to play Caffyn at single wicket. — Argus.
