The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 1867.

The firiug for the General Government district prizes took place at Wakapuaka ou Thursday, and at the firing ground, Maitai Valley, by the City Company, yesterday, under the superintendence of Captain M'Tavish, and Captain aud Adjutant Lockett, of the Militia and Volunteers. The distances were 300, 400, aud 500 yards. The following are the scores of the two companies : — Wakapuaka.

A General Government Gazette, dated 12th February, contains a proclamation convoking the assembly of Parliament at Wellington on the 20th of April next, to take into consideration the state and welfare of the colony. Yesterday Mr. Graham, publican, charged G. J. Baker with breaking a square of glass in his window. This morning Sergeant Nash, after placing the man in the dock, informed the Magistrate that the matter had been squared out of Court. The defeudaut was discharged from custody. Mr. A. Pitt applied for an adjournment of the case of Hammond v. Field, in which the latter was charged on a sworn information, with stealing bricks. His Worship granted the postponement and took occasion to express his great disapprobation of the conduct of Mr. D. Sinclair, defendant's attorney, who had been to the office of the Clerk of the Court, and censured that officer for issuing a summons. The Magistrate said he considered that Mr. Sinclair had shown very bad taste, was a great deal too fast, and must bo taught not to interfere with matters with which he had nothing to do. His Excellency the Governor has appoiuted James Thompson Catley, Esq., to the office of Sub-Treasurer for the Province of Nelson. Au admirable opportunity (says the New Zealand Advertiser of the Bth inst.) is offered to excursionists to be present at the forthcoming Nelson races, astheTaranaki will leave Wellington on the evening of the 18th inst., and will remain at Nelson two clear days. The charge of passage including provisions, is most moderate, being only £2. We believe the cricketers will, if possible, take this opportunity of going to Nelson to play the return match. H.M. s.s. Challenger was in Hobson's Bay when the Tararua left. She will remain there until the arrival of the English mail, when she will proceed to Port Chalmers with despatches for the Governor. By a telegram received on the 6th inst. at Wellington, it is announced that his Excellency the Governor, who is at present visiting the country districts of Otago, will proceed to Southland on Thursday next. Should the news from Tauranga be as favorable as that laßt received, there will be no necessity for his Excellency hastening his return from the South, and >u that case he need, not be expected iu Wellington for a fortnight or three weeks.
