The boat race between Postboy, with a Nelson crew, and Faugh-a-Ballagh, at Wellington, yesterday, was won by the former by two minutes and a-half. The Nelson cricketers have sent a challenge to those of Wellington to go over and play a friendly game. As travelling is attended with considerable expense, the lovers of the sport and those who are desirous of seeing the credit of Nelson maintained will have an opportunity afforded them of contributing to the fund necessary to lit the cricketers out. It appears from the answer of the Provincial Secretary, to a question put to him by Mr. Curtis, that the Proviucial : Government have received no official intimation of the intent of Sir G. G-rey to visit Nelson. Is his Excellency expecting an invitation from the citizens ? The matter had better be looked to. Mr. Barraclough's swimming bath is open for ladies on Tuesdays and Fridays, from noon to 5 p.m. Every attention has beeu paid by the proprietor to secure secrecy as well as comfort, and we can confidently say that such efforts as he has made ought to be appreciated. The following new magistrates have been appointed : Messrs. J. Tinline, of Amuri ; W. M'Eae and H. Beit, of Waimea East ; C. Parker and B. M'Mahon, of Motueka ; and H. C. Dauiell and A. Greenfield, of Nelson. The shooting for the Government prizes is expected to take place about the end of March. The Coroner, W. W. Squires, Esq., held an inquest, on Monday last, on the body of Alfred Taylor, of Waimea-west. The deceased had been out rabbit shooting, and whilst resting his gun on the stump of a tree, allowed it to slip off ; the gun went off and shot him in the head. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death." The Westport Times reports that a man named Nicholls was stuck up by bushrangers on Suuday last. They strapped him to a tree, gagged his mouth, and robbed him of his money and 8 ounces of gold. The villains were followed and captured by Constables Davis and Stewart, brought back, and identified by Nicholls. They gave their names as Alexander M'Pkerson, James Thompson, and James Anderson. They will be taken before Mr. Kynnersley, and sent to Nelson for trial. The promptitude of Sergeant Franklyn in despatching the constables, and the plucky conduct of the latter, are highly spoken of. At Hokitika, the grand jury have found true bills against W. De Lacey, conspiring to rob ; J. W. Chamberlain, wilful and corrupt perjury ; and James Wilson alias Murray, wilful murder. Samuel Symms, charged at Hokitika with obtaining money and goods under false pretences, has been formally acquitted, the Crowa prosecutor declining to offer any evidence in the case. The juiy acquitted him on a previous charge, and the third was abandoned. The election for the City of Dunedin, has eesulted as follows : Reynolds, 333; Grant, 52. The N. Z.
