The following paragraph appears in the Southern Cross: — We are informed by the officers of II. M. s. Challenger, which arrived from Tauranga, that some of their number made an expedition to the settlement of Uropi (Europe) on learning the news respecting the presence of Hau-lmus in the neighborhood, and their threats to murder the survey party. The expedition were warned against attempting the journey by Mr. Clarke, the Kesident Magistrate, but nevertheless proceeded on horseback well armed for the occasion. The party returned in the evening, without having seen anything affording the least cause for alarm. The feeling in Tauranga on the return of the surveyors was very unsettled ; and it is feared the demise of William Thompson will have a great influence for evil on the minds of the disaffected natives of that locality. The W. Advertiser says elsewhere will be seen a notice to the public that after the 9th of April next the Board of Works, in pursuance of the provisions of the Streets Sewerage and Drainage Act, will require that all the cess-pools at the back of the houses in Lambton Quay and other crowded localities shall be filled up, and that earth-closets or moveable buckets shall be used instead. We understand that the Board intends to have this carried into effect generally and strictly, and we highly commend their action in the matter and trust the public will take it in a propper light, and commence making the necessary changes at once. If they do not the powers of the Board to enforce the substitution will be used, and the people will be putting the Commissioners to unnecessary trouble and themselves to useless expense. We are requested by the agents of the N.Z.S.N. Company to call attention to an alteration in the date of sailing of the s.s. Taranaki for Wellington, with the mails for England via Panama. She will arrive in Nelsou on the 3rd of February, and leave for Picton, Wellington, and the Southern ports, on the 4-Lh, instead of on the 6th, as previously advertised.
