In the Resident Magistrate's Court, to-day, John Paterson Avas fined 10s. and costs, for drunkenness. William Thompson Avas sentenced to imprisonment, Avith hard labor, for three calendar months, for stealing coals from !\h. Jonathan Levick, on the 9th inst. It appeared from the evidence of Thomas Cooper, that the prisoner lived in a tent on the hill. Yesterday morning, he Avas seen coming from the Albion Wharf, Avith a scale on his back. He returned Avith a sack in Avhich he put about half a cwt, of coal. The witness stopped him, and ou searching his tent found a similar quantity of coal in lumps. On being taken into custody and before the magistrate, the prisoner admitted stealing the coal. Great complaiuts are made just now of the petty depredations that aro committed in this neighborhood. Yesterday morning a boy who was standing on the Avharf near Mr Beit's residence, fell into the Avater. He would have been lost but for the intrepidity of a mau Avho Avas passing at the time, avlio plunged into the Avater and rescued the youth. We are sorry the names of the parties have not been given to us. If the name of the man who saved the boy's life should be fonvarded Ave shall be happy to publish it. Such generous actions deserve more than a passing comment. The friends of Captain Levy, owner of the schoouer Eclipse, which Avas lately wrecked on the Buller bar, are getting up a subscription in his favor. They state that he has a large family, Avho are, by the accident that happened to the vessel, left in very destitute circumstances, and Avould highly appreciate any kindness showu to them by the benevolent public to whom the appeal is made. In another column, we publish the result ofjthe firing for the prizes given by tlie Provir - ciul Government, Avhich took place on Satuiday last. The moruing Avas beautifully finr, and a large party of spectators, including a fair proportion of ladies, Avas attracted to the shooting grouud. The firing was under the superintendence of Captain M 'Tavist, and Captain and Adjutant Locket., and gave general satisfaction to the officers aud company assembled. Before the firing had concluded, the weather changed, the rain descended in torrents, and spoiled the latter part of the proceedings. It will be seen from the score that good shooting took place, and' that the Nelson rifles. bid fair to attain to excellence, in the difficult art.
