PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT RIFLE PRIZES. Superintendent's Office, Nelson, 24th October, 1866. THE QOMPETITION for RIFLE PRIZES to be given by the Provincial Government of Nelson, for the YEAR 1866, will take place on TUESDAY, the 4th day of December next. On this occasion Five Prizes will be fired for, viz. : — FOUR RCFLES, one for each Company of Volunteers; and the CHAMPION PRIZE, A HANDSOME REVOLVER. Sets of accoutrements and implements for cleaning, &c, will be given with each Rifle; also, 250 rounds of ammunition. Competitors for these Prizes will fire at ranges of 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards, five shots at each range, without artificial rest; any position. The Rules and Regulations adopted for the last General Government Prizes, in other respects, to be strictly adhered to. The fourth clause of the Rifle Prize Act requiring that no prize shall be given unless a certain degree of proficiency be attained, it is to be understood that no prize will be given to any competitor who does not score 40 points. The first FOUR Prizes may be shot for by all Volunteers of the Province on the present Roll who have not already won a Provincial Government Rifle Prize'. The Fifth Prize or Championship may be shot for by two from each Company who score the highest number of points when competing for the first four prizes, and by the winners of previous prizes given by-the Provincial Government, whose names are on the Roll. The firing for the first Four Prizes will take place on the respective Practice Grounds of each Company, commencing at 9 o'clock a.m. The firing for the Championship will take place on the City Shooting Ground, on a day to be fixed for that purpose by the Adjutant, when Ties (if any)for the first Four Prizes will be shot off. All differences as to points will be decided by the Commanding Officers, who will superintend the firing of their respective Companies.
