LOCAL NEWS.
NELSON BOARD OF WORKS. Friday, Jane 7, 1866. Present : Messrs. Bentley, Rout, Carter, Burn, Burns, Wright, and Watson. Mr. Bentley in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A specification of work proposed to be executed was laid before the Board. it was resolved that tlie work be proceeded with, provided that the inhabitants interested will given guarantee to meet half the expense, according to a. letter received by the Board from Mr. Wakefield. • It was. resolved that a specification and estimate of cost of certain proposed work in Washington Valley, reported upon by Messrs. Bentley and Carter, be prepared previous to the next meeting of the Board. It was resolved thut the gravelling, formation, &c, in portions of Grove, Tasman, Cam bria, and North Trafalgar streets, be proceeded with as soon as the prisoners can be obtained from the gaol, in accordance with the terms of the letter received from the Provincial Secretary. The cost of the said work not to exceed £250. The consideration of the subject of increasing the efficiency of the inspection of nuisances, was postponed until next meeting. An application from Appo Hockton, for a few drain pipes, was granted. Proposed and seconded, that Messrs. Bentley and Carter be deputed to purchase for the use of the Board, a good serviceable horse, cart, and harness. Carried. It was resolved, that specifications be prepared for gravelling road, clearing out ditches, and forming water-table from Mr. Cooke's, painter, Hardy-street; to Mr. Witney's, in Vanguard-street. An application from Mr. Fisher, for leave to erect a verandah in Bridge-street, was granted, subject to approval. A letter was received from Mr. Elliott, relative to certain obstructions in Examiner-street. The matter was postponed until next board night. A letter was received from Mr. Gibbon, relative to the state of the footway in Cambria-street. The Surveyor was instructed to attend to it. A letter was received from Mr. Brunner, asking leave to erect a temporary fence at the north end of Collingwood-street, to assist in constructing a live fence. Leave was granted. A letter was received from the Rev. Mr. Gnrin, requesting that the footway at the eastern end of Manukau -street be lowered. The Surveyor was directed to look to it. A letter was received from Mr. Barton, requesting permission to erect a temporary fence in Gloucesterstreet, to protect a live fenx. Leave was granted. A petition from the inhabitants of the western •side of the Brook-street stream was received, re-
questing that an opening lie left in the breakwater now in progress, sufficiently wide to admit a cart. Granted, subject to their making a breakwater as proposed by them, to prevent damage to the present work, and subject to the Secretary's approval. A communication was received from 11 inhabitants of Trafalgar-street, drawing attention to the obstruction caused by the hoarding round the front of the building noAV in course of erection for the Bank of New Zealand, in that street. It was proposed that the same be removed back to the centre of the footpath. The bank-book was produced, showing a balance to the credit of tlie Board of £170 10s. 1 Id. The Board authorised the payment of tlie following accounts: — Labor, £42 18s; J. .Jennings, £'.i 3s; advertisements — Ne'son Evening Mail, £3 ss. Bd.; Examiner, _15 Is 9d,; Colonist, £15 6s. 9d.; stationery. R. Lucas, £3 _s. 3d.; Cress well, £11 Os. 3d. The Board then adjourned until the 21st inst. The South Australian Register, May 10, states that the Rev. W. Taylor, of California, has settled with his family at Cape Town, for a period of six months. He intends visiting Natal. His eldest sou, Morgau, recovered his health npon the voyage, aud the rest of the family are well. There is no charge for newspapers sent to England via Suez. One penny postage is charged on newspapers sent via Panama. H. W . Turnell, Esq., has been appointed Registrar of births, deaths, and marriages, for the district of Aorere, Nelson Province. Pearce N. Nixou, formerly engaged in the Nelson Telegraph Office, has been committed for trial before the Supreme Court at Picton, on a charge of passing valueless cheques on the Bank of New Zealand. The Melbourne Argus s May 21st, reports that the inspection of the P. and O. Company's books, by Captain Black, has led to the discovery of certain discrepancies in the accounts of the Company. Iu consequence of this Mr. Jno. Sparks, the agent, lias resigned, and has been succeeded by Mr. VV. C- Clifton.
