TARANAKI

We have, by the Taranaki, files of Taranaki papers to the 2nd instant, from which we extract the following : — The boring operations of the People's Petroleum Company are proceeding vigorously. Although the apparatus has only been at work a few clays, a depth of upwards of twenty-five •feet has been already reached. The share list of the Taranaki Petroleum company, closed on Saturday last. The number of shares subscribed for, in this province, is 871. Applications for 800 more'wero made from other places, but as the company's total number is 1000 shares, only 129 were left to meet the demand. The London correspondent of the Wellington Independent, writing under date March 26, says: — "The Tavauaki Iron Sand Company is making rather slow progress towards completing its arrangements for commencing its works in New Plymouth. This arises from the state of the money market, and the unusual distrust with which all new companies (limited) are just now regarded."
