LOCAL NEWS.

! As the Gothenburg leaves for Hokitika and Melbourne early on Thursday morning, a mail for those ports by that vessel will probably close to-morrow evening. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning George Johnson was fined 10s. and costs for drunkenness. A. J. Barker, a seaman on board the schooner Dcesse, summoned John Norris, mate of that vessel for assaulting him. Defendant denied assaulting him on board the ship, but admitted having struck him in a public house for calling for liquor aud not paying for it. Fined 10s. and costs. Complainaut was advised to return to his ship, to escape being taken up as a deserter. Yesterday his Honor Judge Johnson visited Nelson College, and met the Govenors there. His Honor suggested an improved mode of mode of keeping the accounts, and in a conversation respecting the minimum standard to which pupils seeking scholarships oughtto attain, expressed a fear that the trust deeds rendered it imperative that the scholarships could not be refused in consequence of the incompetency of the competitors. In conseq nee of his Honor's intercession the pupils obtained a holiday, the announcement of which was received with high glee. Wc are glad to find that the Captain of the City Rifles announces a parade to-morrow afternoon. The Volunteer question seems to have been taken up with some spirit in some of the country districts, Waimea West, for instance ; and there is no reason why Nelson should not exhibit similar alacrity in a movement of such general iuterest. There is no lack of young and active men amongst us, and Nelson ought to turn out one or two good companies who shall obtain such a reputation for excellence in drill aud rifle shooting, as has been claimed by the youth of other provinces. We hope to be able to record not only meetings for parade, but proficiency in martial'exercises. The Provincial Government inform the public tbat the annual education rate will be levied on Monday, 2nd July next, at places appointed for the purpose in the vartous districts of the province. The various local committees of education are to be elected on the 13th instant. Richmond Fair is announced to take place to-morrow; when ifc is expected a considerable number of cattle, horses, aud sheep will change hands. Wc see it is recommended t-" show for saie grain, dairy produce, roots, and that the Agricultural Hall is placed at the service of the exhibitors. We understand that M. Viard, the Roman Catholic Bishop, is expected to arrive in Nelson shortly from the West Coast. On Sunday next he will hold a confirmation at St. Mary's, Nelson, and at Waimea on the following Sunday.
