Aqua Firma — The ice on the river is in splendid condition for a sham fight on a large scale, and we ought to have one this winter. It is strong enough to "bear any weight which could be placed upon it, and would even carry a locomotive and train. Ice two inches thick will bear' inlantry; four inches, cavalry with light guns; six iuches, heavy field guns; and eight inches, the heaviest siege guns, with 1000 pounds weight to a square inch.-— Montreal Gazette. A Harsh Judgment.— At the Berks Petty Sessions, held at the Town-hall, Windsor, before Messrs. F. 11. Crutchiey and T. J. Hercy, George Gaily, apparently half-starred, waa charged with stealing a turnip, the property of George Allen, at Old Windsor. The poor fellow pulled a turnip on the previous Sunday morning, and ate half of it before he was detected. The defendant pleaded guilty, and in default of paying a fine of .Os. and 6s. ld. costs, he was sentenced to 14 days' hard labor in Reading Gaol.
