Elopement with a Footman in Belgravia.—On the 18th January au elopement took place between a footman and the daughter of his mistress. The young man, who has a smart appearance, entered the service about two years since, aud during that period has been well cared for. On the day in question, the young lady as usual went out for a walk, the footman leaving about the same time. Ou the return of the footman about two o'clock the same day, he was called to account for.leaving the house, without leave, aud discharged at a moments notice, when on receiving that notice the happy bridegroom informed his mistress that with his luggage he should take her daughter, • now his wife, which announcement so startled her, that she has been ill ever since. The marriage took place at Holy Trinity Church, Sloane-street Chelsea. —Eng. Paper. .** New Zealand Tobacco. —The Jurors of the New Zealand Exhibition have awarded honorary certificates for "exhibits" of to'bacco, to Messrs. Begg, M'Lean, and Wilkinson, of Hawke's Bay. Their report states : —" The cultivation of tobacco appears to have received considerable attention in 'this province, and the various samples reflect jgreat credit on their producers. The tobacco, if not equal to the better kind of American, is very much superior to a great deal that is in this colony. It is to be regretted ithat no statement of the quantity produced and the cost of production was alForded, as such information would have been very valuable and instructive. The best sample was exhibited by Samuel Begg, (116) grown at the Wairoa. The roll of tobacco (119) prepared and grown by the Natives at Tamaki

_3ush, Manawatu, and exhibited by Mr. Joha j Wilkinson, is of excellent quality, and dei serves praise for the soundness of its condi- \ tion. The nat : ve grown tobacco (117) exhibited by the Superintendent of Hawke's Bay, similarly deserves commendation."
