The People's Company. — 1700 shares of £1 eaeh have been subscribed for, and the company intends to raise its capital to £3000. Taranaki Petroleum Company. — The share list of this company was opened on Saturday last, and during the week 262 shares (of £10 each) have been subscribed for. Boring machinery, we believe, is about to be sent for from Canterbury. The Alpha Well. — This well is now over a 100 feet deep, about ten feet more having been made during the week, notwithstanding some unavoidable delays in respect to boring machinery. We are told that the strata now being passed through are very variable, changing from hard to soft every few inches. It is a curious fact, if true, that the oil is affected by the changes in the atmosphere, much more being visible in the tube in mild than cold weather. — Herald, May 5. Taranaki Iron Sand Co.— lt appears from a statement in the letter of the London correspondent of the Wellington Independent that nearly 4000 shares (of £10 each) have been taken up in this company in England. It is proposed to grant them all the beach between the Huatoki and the Waitara.
