By the Wellington steamer s which arrived this morning, we have latest dates of Wellington and East Coast papers. They contain no news of importance. The business men of Dunedin are makingX au attempt to bring the carriers' strike to an end, by volunteering to pay for the wagoners that extra toll which the Government has declined to remit. By this proposal they have endorsed the case made out by the carriers, and certified, so to speak, to the truth of their statement, that the difference between wagon and dray horses in the schedule of toils is unjustifiable.-— E. Star. Last Saturday a heavy gale from the south- v west swept over Christchurch. The wind was high during the whole day, but increased in intensity about half-past six, p.m. The dust was intolerable. Shortly after the hour named the gale suddenly subsided for a while, but recommenced with great violence, and continued to blow during almost the whole of the night. Yesterday the day was rough and boisterous, the wind continuing from the same quarter. The framework of a house in the course of erection on the Perry road was blown down, and in Christchurch the largest portion of one of the trees in Mr. Justice Gresson's grounds was torn away, falling across the footpaths. — Lyttelton Times.
