LOCAL NEWS.

Wreck: ,of ; the "Wonga _ y "Wonga. — The Gothenburg brings.intelligence that the Wonga. Wonga had.goi^e ashore at the Grey, and "become a wreck, and had been condemned, and sold for £250 as such. Captain Mundle attribute the disaster to incorrect signals from the flag-staff. Building Society. — The monthly subscription meeting of the Nelson Building, Land, and In vestment' Society will be held at seven o'clock this evening. "Lunacy^— Ai '. the "Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, David Wottph was brought up on a charge, of lunacy. Messrs. Hunter Brown .and Thomas Brunner, presided. .-.The evidence of Messrs. Cusack and Cotterell was taken. It was to the effect thatthe'man was of unsound mind, and unfit to be at large. 1 A certificate from a medical, man in' the Waimea district, was to, the same effect." Constable Sherwood proved that the . man was violent in the lock-up, and had to be forcibly' clothed. The bench ordered the accused to be taken to the lunatic asylum. Smashing the Street .Lamps'. — We are sorry to learn that several of the street lamps have been broken of late. It has not transpired who the offenders are, whether rowdy sailors, or some of the quasi fast men about town. Of one thing we are certain, that the act is a most disgraceful one, and one that will be severely punished if the culprits are discovered. What, are the police about, that our street lamps are thus broken with impunity? The Panama Route. — We observe from some of the New. Zealand papers, that the Kaikoura, a splendid steamship of 1,500 tons burthen, and 500 horse power, will leave Sydney on or about Ist proximo, and Wellington a week afterwards, arriving at Panama in 2S days from New Zealand. From the Isthmus lines of steamers will radiate to all the principal ports of North and South America, the West Indies, and Europe. 'We believe that the opening up of steam communication with Panama will be the means of bringing New Zealand prominently into notice in America and Europe, and so be the means of introducing here the skill and en--terprise which is characteristic of the American people. A steamer will leave Panama on the 24th June, for Wellington and Sydney.
