The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 1866.
Through the courtesy of the officers of the Customs, we have before us the returns of the whole of the trade coastwise during the past year. These returns have evidently been prepared with great care, and they furnish much valuable information. We will publish a synopsis of their contents at an early date, We would, however, impress upon shippers of New Zealand manufactures the necessity of particularising in their entries the New Zealand produce shipped by them to other New Zealand ports, as distinct from British and foreign goods. A little care in this respect on their part would add largely to the value of these returns. We believe that a large quantity of Nelson manufactures have been exported under the head of British goods, and thus a correct impres- ' sion is not given of the industrial progress of this place. For instance : iv boots and shoes the export is set down at £4,695, of which only £55 appears as New Zealand manufacture Similar remarks could be made of other manufactured goods. We draw attention to this subject with a hope that greater care will be taken by shippers in future. We notice a letter from Mr. Webb in both the Exami7ier and the Colonist, complaining that iv a former article in this journal devoted to statistics, the export of Nelson cloth is set down at £165, whereas he himself exported £410 worth. Mr. Webb has only himself to thank for any incorrectness in the returns we have published, as had his shipments been correctly entered through the Customs, they would have been correctly reported ancl the true value of the Nelson manufacture of that article would have been seen.
