quested to procure for the Council a return of all fees and fines received from the Magistrates' Court, Motueka, for the years 1865 to 1866, both inclusive." Mr. Baigent seconded the motion, which was carried. Previous to the motion being carried, the Provincial Secretary laid the returns in question on the table. At half past six 6 o'clock the House adjourned until this evening. NOTICES OF MOTION. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18, 1866. 1. Mr. Baigent to ask the Provincial Secretary whether it is by the direction of the Government that the bed of the Wairoa River above the bridge is being deepened. 2. Mr. Dodson to ask the Provincial Solicitor if it is the intention of the Government to bring in a bill to amend the Cattle Trespass Ordinance. 3. The Provincial Solicitor to move, that a select committee be appointed to take into consideration the law of Cattle Trespass; such committee to consist of the Speaker, Messrs. Dodson, Baigent, McMahon, Sparrow, Kelling, Oliver, and the mover. 4. Mr. Oliver to move, that this Council fully recognises the necessity of opening the western parts of this province to the importation of cattle, for the supply of the gold-mining population on the West Coast; but being persuaded that the most calamitous results can .lot fail to attend the introduction of the disease of pleuro-pneumonia into the settled districts, recommends that the proclamation of the 31st October last, be rescinded, so far as the same applies to the eastern side of the province, and that the Port of Nelson be, for the future, closed against the importation of cattle from the Australian colonies and other infected places. 5. Mr. Kingdon to move, that a select committee be appointed to consider and report on the petition of Mr. Matthew Batty ; such committee to consist of the Provincial Solicitor, the Provincial Secretary, Messrs. Curtis, McMahon, Gibbs, Akersten ; and the mover. 6. The Provincial Secretary to move the. second reading of the Fencing Bill. 7. The Provincial Solicitor to move for leave to bring in a bill to authorise the Superintendent to lease certain lands granted for public purposes, in the district of Motueka. 8. The Provincial Solicitor to move, that the Council resolve itself into committee, for the purpose of taking into consideration the Estimates. Order of the Day. Council to resolve itself into committee on the Public Works' Bill. Permanent Building Socibty.— The meeting which took place on Monday was well attended. 50 new shares were issued at prices varying from 265. to 30s. The competition for money was unusually good. Messrs. PickeLt, Percy, and Webster were elected auditors. Wakefield. — A meeting of the residents of Wakefield took place in the school-room on Monday evening, the I Gth instant, 'for the purpose of considering the desirability of providing a public reading room. The attendance was numerous. Mr. Pearce was voted to the chair. It was proposed, seconded, and carried, '• That it is desirable that a room to hold the library, and also to be used as a reading-room, be erected." The necessity of removing the library cases from their present position in the school-room was dwelt upon by the speakers. By another resolution a committee was appointed to take the matter in hand. The customary vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings. — Communicated. Resident Magistrate's Coxjbt. — At an adjourned sitting of the court yesterday. Mr. Joseph Tumble sued .Robert Mainsty for £7 10s., for board and lodging. The defendant had given a cheque for the amount, on the Bank at Picton. Mr. Trimble telegraphed to the manager on Monday, and got a reply, that defendant had no account there. The court met at two o'clock yesterday, when judgment was given for plaintiff for the amount claimed, and at live minutes after two defendant was in goal. There were no cases this morning. Volunteer Company. — A meeting for the purpose of forming a Volunteer Company for the City of kelson, under the Volunteer Act, 1865, and for the nomination of officers, and other business, was held at the Bank Hotel yesterday evening. Mr. Perry was in the chair. It was proposed by Mr. "Wigzell, and seconded by Mr. Webb, that a Company be formed in the City of Nelson, under the Volunteer Act, 1865 ; to be called the No. 1 City Company N.R.V. Carried unanimously. The following gentlemen were nominated as officers : — Mr, P. McTavish, Captain ; Mr. John Percy, Lieutenant; and Mr. M. Sinclair, Ensign. Mr. Wigzell was unanimously elected Secretary, and Mr. McTavish, Treasurer. The meeting closed after the customary vote of thanks to the chairman. The WelUnyton Independent of the 14th instant says, "That Mr. Stafford has agreed to continue the existing Mail Contract with the N.Z.S.N. Company, until the Ist June next, at which time it is probable that the whole question will be opened, and the future Inter-provincial Mail Service thrown open to Public Competition." Exodus prom Tasmania. — The Tasmanian Herald laments the tendency of the youth of Tasmania to leave the island and try their fortunes elsewlierc. It says that numbers of the leading colonial youth and commercial men of standing and position, have departed, through " the want of a remunerative field here in which to employ their energies and talents. No more striking proof of the wasting condition of the country could possibly be atFoded than this migration of our professional and mercantile men." •
