On the main creek are situated the town of the district, St. Patrick's, aud its lesser rival Johnson's, at a distance oi' eight miles from each other, and between these two are a continued succession of diggings ; again, further up for more than iour miles are workings being carried on with varied degrees of success — -some men a: times exube- © „ rant with delight, other again going on m the old-fashioned jog-trot of lair wages making : probably this is what your informant meant wheu he talked of 15 miles of digging on the one side of the saddle. The gold here is got iv crevices of the rock, sometimes very rich pockets rewarding the laborer; it is also got ou small beaches and ou the elbows of the creek as it winds iis tortuous way along ; the sample of gold X, however, in my opinion, the very best i liave yet seen on the West Coast, from its coi, rs.-, uuggetty nature.
